My personal health journey with PCOS

Updated: Nov 18, 2024

For many, many years I've had a passion for health and wellness and my knowledge has just grown. The more I learned the more passionate I became. My passion for knowledge about health and wellness was put increased even more once I was officially diagnosed in January of 2019 with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). You may be asking yourself...what is PCOS though? PCOS is a hormonal imbalance caused by the ovaries (the organ that produces and releases eggs) creating excess male hormones. Women, like me, with PCOS often have erratic menstrual cycles, missed periods and unpredictable ovulation; just to name a few. The real cause of PCOS is still unknown but a woman can get PCOS any time after puberty and could be genetic or environmental.

I personally had it for 15 years without knowing it and why I was experiencing so many unpleasant symptoms. Some of the symptoms I struggled with are: acne, bloating, daytime fatigue, low energy and almost non-exisistant cycles that had to be induced by constant medication. I was on birth control after high school soley to regulate my cycles but when I chose to go off of it to see if my hormones could regulate themselves is when I really started struggling with a increase in unpleasant symptoms. I was determined not to go back onto birth control and to get my hormones to regulate naturally. I didn't know exactly how to do that and it was years before my official diagnosis. I had one gyno that told me I had an hormonal imbalance but never looked more into or helped me after that. For years I was just put on constant medication to force cycles.

After my husband and I got married in 2018 we thought that I had gotten pregnant but was getting constant no's. I was having all the normal symptoms of conceiving...so we thought. I scheduled an appt with my new ob-gyn and she immediately sent me for an internal ultrasound and ordered blood work. After that appointment it was confirmed that I was not pregnant but had PCOS, I was honestly devestated. I knew very little about this condition and after finding out there was no cure, I spent many months researching all about it and how to best manage it. The most common way to manage it was through the aid of "lifelong" medication; but I wanted to see if it could be managed without the aid of medication. So, I spent many more months doing research on using food as medicine.

I had started to change how I ate and did things about my lifestyle but was still feeling confused because there was so many different opinions. There was a short span of time where I "fell off the wagon" and my symptoms seemed worse than ever...that was when I found a website that really helped me get on the right foot. Within a month of the change I could already feel a difference; I felt less tired and had more energy and my face was clearing up. Sticking to it was not easy but I had to keep reminding myself why I was doing this; especially on the days that were harder.

About 3 years later, I had been able to naturally manage it through the right nutrition and exercise for me! By feeding myself the right things AND staying away from the certain other things my body has started healing itself. I have had two doctors confirm this in early 2022 and it has confirmed that you really can use food as medicine.

I encourage you to reach out to hear more about what I have done to achieve this or if you would like to be coached by me for your own health and wellness, I would love to help you achieve success in your health.

I look forward to talking to you!
